Autumn Morning in Nelson is a photograph from Mikinobu Komatsu’s recently published book LIGHT MOODS SOUTH, a series of 50 photographs with haiku of the South Island of New Zealand.  Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that goes back to the 17th Century and it follows the rule of 5-7-5 syllables in 3 lines.  Master Basho composed haiku as he travelled into the countryside of Japan.  A Haiku is sometimes emotional, sometimes imaginative, sometimes funny and fun, and sometimes noticing an interesting detail or happening.

Komatsu was born in Japan and moved to Sydney Australia in 1977, which he now calls home.  Komatsu’s photographic production has also frequently taken him to New Zealand over the past 25 years. He says that the rich quality of light in New Zealand inspired him to pursue photography and he strives to capture the mood created by its light.  Komatsu evokes an emotional experience by alluding to an encounter that is beyond the scene – something more akin to the essence of the place in his image.
