 Kete Poster

Interest in handmade and sustainable crafted objects has grown immensely since the late 1990s. In 2006, writing in Ideolog, Hamish Coney even went so far as to publically comment that ‘New Zealand’s object art scene is arguably more happening than our "proper" art scene.’ His observations demonstrate the growing interest from serious collectors of New Zealand craft and design in the market for ceramics, furniture and glass, as well as the presence of a new generation of makers and arts commentators such as Damian Skinner and Douglas Lloyd-Jenkins who curate craft and design exhibitions and publish serious commentary on such work.
Recognising the importance of contemporary craft in New Zealand, Kete will also be the occasion of the launch of Craft Aotearoa - a newly established naitonal advocate for craft and design.
