The Gallery

The Academy Galleries in the historic Wharf Offices building at 1 Queens Wharf were opened in February 2000 by the Honourable Governor General Sir Michael Hardie Boys.

Designed by Herriot+Melluish the award winning galleries are spacious and well lit, creating versatile spaces for exhibitions and functions.

They have a multi-channel sound system and a dual-access kitchen that Wellington's caterers know well.

The gallery is a versatile space with three separate gallery spaces and an annexe off Gallery Two, so exhibitions of any size can be catered for.

Several of the walls are moveable to create a variety of layouts and interesting spaces.

The Academy generally has at least four open exhibitions a year and a number of curated exhibitions featuring the work of invited artists. Work can be submitted digitally for open exhibitions, which is very convenient for out-of-town artists, and all work is subject to selection by an ever-changing selection panel. Practising artist members can also apply to be a part of two Solo (select group) shows each year.

Our main gallery can be hired for exhibitions from time to time, but this is secondary to the hireage of Lightspace. Lightspace Gallery is permanently available for hire and is dedicated to showing the new work of artists seeking greater exposure and critical recognition, particularly emerging artists.
