Landscapes and Beyond
After a career in Graphic Design and print media services I am now a 'full time' painter with a studio alongside my residence in Seatoun, Wellington, NZ.
While working mostly in oils on canvas the subject matter is quite varied. In my landscapes, that can feature rural, lake and coastal scenes, I make an attempt to capture the cyclic, evolving effects of the energies of nature and our collective imprint on the resulting expressions of form and colour. The spread of material affluence from major urban centres to rural and coastal environments, the changes to rural based industries and the visual impact this is having on the landscape may feature as components in my work.
Social / cultural / economic issues will sometimes be intertwined within the overall framework.
I'm creating surrealistic, pictorial stories that are based on the idea that the painted picture knows itself to be metaphorical, rhetorical, transformational, fictional.
Since establishing my studio in 2003 and painting full time, I have had several successful shows and works have sold independently and through various galleries to NZ and overseas buyers in the USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, UK and Sweden.
I won the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Gordon Harris Award in 2009.
