Brian Flintoff
Brian Flintoff: 'Mau I Nga Hau e Wha'
This carving is named “Mau I Nga Hau e Wha” which translates as ‘Carried by the Four Winds’. The winds are carved as the waka or container with faces joining at either end. The lid is a purerehua or bullroarer carved as a moth which is the meaning of purerehua. Inside is the cord and its handle is carved as a caterpillar. The wing pattern is an acknowledgement of the songs it creates as the sounds make pleasing shapes in the silence. Though not the loudest of these instruments because of the raised carving, it will play.
It comes with a copy of the book “Taonga Puoro, Musical instruments of the Maori” written by Brian.

Carved from Matai. Overall length about 520mm. nz$5700
